When Diggy Simmons‘ song dissing J. Cole leaked last week, the young rapper stood his ground and his family added extra support. Today (April 6), Diggy put the beef to rest durring a fan meet-and-greet.
The seventeen year-old rapper explained to Hot Morning Crew hosts DJ Buck and Nancy Barrow, how the record, “What You Say To Me” came about.
“My sister came to me it was late 2010 and she said ‘J. Cole said certain things about me that weren’t true,’ and she felt disrespected,” he explained in an interview hosted by CBS Local’s WZMX/Hartford. “A couple of months later, when I started the recording process for my album, I went in and I did it. When someone is lying on your family or disrespecting your family, you dont want anybody to do that.”
While Diggy said he has no intention of reaching out to Cole, he was careful not to fan the flames of the beef.
“I mean there’s nothing that needs to be said, you know, but it’s not like I hate him, or have super duper hard feelings. It’s just, you want respect for the people that you love.”
As CBS Local previously reported “What You Say to Me” finds Diggy taking on Cole for his verses on “Purple Rain,” on which Cole describes a naughty reverend’s daughter who allegedly represents Diggy’s sister Vanessa.
“The other day I was listening to ‘Purple Rain,’ couldn’t believe all of the things that I heard him say,” Diggy raps, “Who dat, who dat, you know who it is/ heard you lying on my sis, tellin’ people that you hit…Little n***a named Cole think he live like me, jet setter trend setter, yeah you not like me…”
While Cole’s “Purple Rain” was released over two years ago, he recently dropped “Grew Up Fast,” on which he directly mentions Diggy and his sister Vanessa.
“Move along cock-sucker, ain’t got nothing to see, unless you talking blockbuster, you n***as is not Russell/You’re more Diggy, Me? I’m more Biggie/No diss to the young boy, I’m just rapping, get bored quickly…What up Vanessa/I loved ya that one semester…”
As Diggy’s response made its way around the internet yesterday, some critics questioned the timing of the release, which dropped a week after the sales for his debut album proved to be less than stellar.
However, members of Diggy’s family, including father Rev. Run, took to Twitter to defend him and address the controversy.
